The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is a series of mid-class luxury cars manufactured by DaimlerChrysler. Introduced in 1996, the CLK-Class is now available in two body-styles: 2-door coupe and 2-door convertible.
It is offered in a choice of five elegant models: the CLK350 Coupe, the CLK550 Coupe, the CLK350 Cabriolet, the CLK550 Cabriolet, and CLK63 AMG Cabriolet. All models are available in a rear-wheel drive (RWD).
For 2007, the new Mercedes-Benz CLK550 replaces the CLK500 and a high-performance CLK63 AMG replaces the CLK55 AMG.
The CLK-Class models are covered by a new vehicle limited warranty for four years or 50,000 miles. The CLK-Class primarily competes with the BMW 3-Series, Jaguar XK, Lexus SC 430, and Chevrolet Corvette.
Engine and Performance
Offered in a choice of three potent engines
With five models, the CLK-Class offers a choice of three powerful engines. The CLK350 Coupe and CLK350 Cabriolet is powered by a 3.5-liter 24-valve V-6 engine, which produces 268 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft. of torque @ 2,400 - 5,000 rpm. This engine is linked to an electronically-controlled 7-speed automatic transmission.
The CLK550 Coupe and CLK550 Cabriolet derive power from a 5.5-liter 32-valve V-8 engine, which churns out 382 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 391 lb-ft. @ 2,800 - 4,800 rpm. This 5.5L V-8 is teamed to an electronically-controlled 7-speed automatic transmission, which is driver adaptive.
The CLK63 AMG Cabriolet gets power from a 6.3-liter 32-valve V-8 engine, which delivers 475 hp @ 6,800 rpm and 465 lb-ft. @ 5,000 rpm. The 6.3L V-8 is mated to an AMG-enhanced electronically-controlled 7-speed automatic transmission. It is also equipped with an AMG SpeedShift with direct manual control. AMG SpeedShift programming provides up to 50 percent faster gear changes, automatically downshifts during braking, prevents unwanted up-shifting while cornering, and features torque converter lockup in all forward gears.
Walk-around
Looks stylish and elegant
The CLK-Class models have smooth, sweeping lines that give them a streamlined and feline look and an elegant curvy profile. All models measure 183.2 inches in length and ride on a wheelbase of 106.9 inches.
The CLK550 Coupe, CLK550 Cabriolet, and CLK63 AMG Cabriolet sport a Black grille with three chrome ribs, while the CLK350 Coupe and Cabriolet feature an Atlas Grey grille with three chrome ribs.
The CLK550 Coupe, CLK550 Cabriolet, and CLK63 AMG Cabriolet also feature an AMG-designed front air dam with mesh air intakes and chrome-ringed round front fog-lamps. These models come with AMG-designed side skirts and rear apron.
All five models come with variable-focus halogen headlamps with clear high-impact polycarbonate lenses, halogen front fog lamps integrated into the front apron, and a single red rear fog lamp integrated in the left tail-lamp cluster. Driver-selectable light-sensing headlamps and driver-programmable daytime running lamps are also standard on all models. Touch Turn Signals, present in all models, flash three times with one touch of the turn-signal lever, for lane-changing. Auxiliary LED turn-signal indicators are integrated with side-mirror housings.
All Cabriolet models come with an insulated triple layer all-season soft top with flush-bonded glass rear window. A fully-automatic operation allows the soft top and all four side windows to be lowered or raised from a single control on the console or from outside the car using the SmartKey remote. The CLK550 Coupe and Cabriolet, and CLK63 AMG Cabriolet also come with a color-keyed AMG-designed rear spoiler on the edge of the trunk lid. The CLK-Class models feature automatically heated dual power mirrors linked to the driver's seat memory.
Dual aero-blade windshield wipers, heated windshield washer nozzles, and infrared rain sensors are standard features of the CLK-Class. The infrared rain sensors automatically adjust the wiper speed and intermittent wiper frequency from infinite delay to fast wiping speed on the basis of the amount of rainfall measured on the windshield. All CLK models also come standard with an electrically heated rear window with auto-shutoff based on time and outside temperature.
All models, with the exception of CLK63 AMG Cabriolet, wear 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and roll on 225/45 ZR17 front and 245/40 ZR17 rear, high-performance tires. The CLK63 AMG Cabriolet stands on 18-inch alloy wheels and rides on 225/40 ZR18 front and 255/35 ZR18 rear, high-performance tires.
Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Luxurious and full of convenience features
The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class models come fully loaded with a luxurious, well-equipped cabin. All CLK models come with 10-way power front seats, each with 3-position memory. The driver's seat memory includes steering column and outside mirror positions. All models feature dual individually contoured rear seats, while 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks and flip-forward seat cushions are featured only in CLK350 Coupe and CLK550 Coupe. Heated front seats and AMG sport seats with supportive side bolsters, AMG cross-piping design, and AMG logos on backrests are exclusive to the CLK63 AMG Cabriolet. All models, except the CLK63 AMG Cabriolet, feature premium leather upholstery, while the CLK63 AMG Cabriolet comes with AMG high-grade Nappa leather upholstery. A leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob is standard on all models.
All models feature an ‘easy-entry system,’ by virtue of which, when either front seatback is tipped forward, the entire front seat moves up and forward for easier access to the rear cabin. The seat returns to its previous position when the seatback is returned upright. All CLK Coupes as well as Cabriolets have got a multi-function steering wheel that provides convenient, additional controls for basic functions of audio system and optional phone, as well as operation of the multi-function display. Also standard is a 4-way tilt/telescoping power steering column.
All models come with a front center console with roll-top cover, enclosed storage compartment, and dual cup-holders. They also feature a retractable storage container, pockets in both doors and parcel net in the right front footwell. A folding rear center armrest with slide-out dual cup-holders and an open center console between rear seats is featured only on the CLK350 Coupe and CLK550 Coupe. Only the CLK550 Coupe, CKL550 Cabriolet and CLK63 AMG Cabriolet feature an auto-dimming rearview mirror and fingertip shift paddles located behind the steering-wheel spokes. All CLK models come with a digital dual-zone automatic climate control with individual left and right digital temperature controls and rotary airflow distribution controls.
All CLK models feature a tunnel mode, which offers one-touch closing of all windows, the sunroof (if equipped), and cabin air intake by pressing and holding the air-recirculation button. Pressing the button again restores previous window and sunroof positions.
All Cabriolet models come with a fine-mesh wind deflector that fastens over the rear-seat area or folds into the molded case for storage in the trunk and a variable trunk compartment, which allows the soft-top well to be used for additional cargo capacity with top up. The Coupes come with a trunk capacity of 10.4 cubic feet, while that of the Cabriolets is 8.6 cubic feet with the top up and 5.4 cubic feet with the top down.
For entertainment, all CLK models come standard with an AM/FM stereo/weather band radio with in-dash single-CD player and an in-dash audio system operating panel with integrated controls and displays for the radio, a CD player, an optional glove-box-mounted 6-disc CD changer, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and portable digital telephone.
The CLK63 AMG Cabriolet is exclusively offered with a Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 digital surround-sound system. The system includes 12 speakers for Coupes and 10 speakers for Cabriolets, including dual surround speakers and a subwoofer, a 7.1-channel amplifier, a multi-channel digital surround-sound technology developed for the professional recording industry to provide a natural and realistic sound stage, and a digital dynamic volume control to help preserve the sound balance under all driving conditions. The CLK63 AMG Cabriolet also comes with an auxiliary input jack in the glove-box that allows connection of an MP3 player to the audio system.
Driving Impressions
Responsive driving dynamics offer a comfortable ride
The CLK-Class is available with a RWD layout, which gives it good stability. Various models are available with a choice of three robust engines: 3.5L V-6, 5.5L V-8, and 6.3L V-8, which knock out 268 hp, 382 hp, and 475 hp respectively. All the engines offer ample torque at all engine speeds and deliver commendable acceleration. The 7-speed automatic transmission responds with seamless shifts.
All models are steered by a rack-and-pinion steering with vehicle-speed-sensitive power assist and integrated hydraulic damper, which offers prompt and precise responses.
The CLK models ride on an independent 3-link front suspension with anti-dive geometry and stabilizer bar, and an independent 5-arm multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar, and geometry for anti-squat and alignment control. Besides this suspension system, the CLK63 AMG Cabriolet also features an AMG sport suspension with AMG-calibrated front and rear coil springs, stabilizers, and shock absorbers. This potent suspension system can smoothly ride over uneven roads and mitigates the impact of road irregularities, delivering a soft, smooth ride.
All the models are equipped with dual-circuit power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, which provide sharp stopping power to the wheels and bring the vehicle to a quick halt at a remarkably short distance. The CLK-Class models are also equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and brake assist technology. ABS prevents locking up of wheels during emergency braking and the brake assist senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance.
With a turning circle of 35.3 feet, the CLK models are much easier to maneuver and park in tight spots as compared to some other vehicles falling in the same segment.
Safety
Plentiful safety features
The CLK-Class models come packed with a host of modern safety features.
All models feature an integrated restraint system, which provides the driver and front passenger with a front airbag, a side-impact airbag, and a three-point seatbelt with an emergency tensioning device (ETD), and an adaptive belt force limiter. Rear passengers are each provided with a three-point seatbelt with ETD and belt force limiter. ETDs are provided for all four seat belts and are deployed in a front or rear impact exceeding a preset threshold of severity, or certain rollovers.
Also standard is an Occupant Classification System (OCS), which automatically adjusts the front passenger's front air bag.
The CLK models also come with front and rear head restraints, head protection curtains, adaptive dual-stage front airbags, and a universal LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system at rear seating positions.
A SmartKey that uses an electronic code to unlock the steering column and ignition is also standard on all models. All models come with an automatic anti-theft alarm system with remote panic feature, and various other safety features as well.
