Driving Impressions
Driving the CL-Class is a pleasure
The CL-Class models are available in a standard RWD layout, which offers impressive traction and keeps the tires glued to the road. The CL550 and CL600 are maneuvered by a rack-and-pinion steering with vehicle-speed-sensitive power assist, which offers crisp and direct responses.
The CL550 and CL600 are powered by 5,461-cc V-8 and 5,513-cc V-12 engines respectively. The V-8 and V-12 produce 382 hp and 510 hp, in that order. The CL550 goes from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 5.4 seconds, while the CL600 accelerates even faster. It touches 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. As is evident, both the engines perform magnificently.
The V-8 is linked to an electronically-controlled 7-speed automatic transmission, while the V-12 is coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Both the transmissions shift smoothly and seamlessly.
Both the CL models ride on a 4-link front suspension with anti-lift control, gas pressurized shocks, and stabilizer bar, and a multi-link independent rear suspension with an anti-squat and anti-dive system. The suspension soaks up huge bumps and delivers a soft, breezy ride.
The CL550 and CL600 are equipped with an active body control (ABC) system, an active suspension system that makes use of a coil spring and an electronically controlled hydraulic cylinder in series, and also a separate gas-pressurized shock absorber at each wheel. Using a total system pressure of up to 2,900 psi, ABC continually adjusts each wheel's suspension to work against vibration, dive, pitch, squat, and roll. ABC also provides automatic all-wheel level control, driver-selectable ride height, and automatic lowering at higher speed.
Dual-circuit power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes supply forceful stopping power to all the wheels and bring the CL550 and CL600 to a screech-less, quick halt with short stopping distances.
Both the models are also equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), which detects impending wheel lockup under heavy braking and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together to help maintain stability as required to prevent lockup and maintain steering ability.
Also standard is a brake assist, which detects emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal and immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance by eliminating the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. Brake assist is released by reducing pressure on the brake pedal.
Both the CL models also come equipped with electronic stability program (ESP) for enhanced traction and better control. ESP compares the driver's intended course, through steering and braking inputs, with the vehicle's response, using lateral acceleration, rotation, and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as required to help correct understeer or oversteer. ESP also integrates all-speed traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained.
Safety
Full of modern safety features
The CL-Class models come with state-of-the-art safety features to ensure protection of the driver and passengers.
The CL550 as well as CL600 features PRE-SAFE, which helps prepare the passenger compartment for a possible collision before it actually happens. If, by maintaining or recognizing circumstances where the capabilities of brake assist or ESP are exceeded, PRE-SAFE senses a possible accident, it takes actions to help protect you better, including adjusting the front passenger seat for potentially more favorable airbag and seatbelt effectiveness, inflating outboard side bolsters and seat cushions of front multi-contour seats, where equipped. It also closes the sunroof if the vehicle is about to spin out of control, and shuts the windows. If no collision occurs, occupants may re-adjust their seats, the windows, and the sunroof.
Also standard on the CL-Class models is an integrated restraint system. As a part of this system, the driver and front passenger are each provided with an adaptive dual-stage front air bag, side-impact air bag, and 3-point seat belt with an emergency tensioning device (ETD), and a dual-stage belt force limiter. The driver is also provided with a knee bag while each rear passenger is provided with a side-impact air bag and a 3-point seat belt with ETD and belt force limiter.
ETDs are deployed in front or rear impacts exceeding a preset threshold of severity, or certain rollovers. A front ETD will not deploy if the seatbelt is unfastened. Adaptive dual-stage front air bags are also standard on both the models. These air bags are deployed in response to frontal impact for severity exceeding a preset deployment threshold.
The CL550 and CL600 also come with window curtain airbags, which are designed to protect in the event of a side collision. In a side impact exceeding a preset threshold, a multi-chamber air bag deploys along the front and rear side windows on the affected side of the car. The integrated rollover sensor automatically deploys the ETDs and, if deemed necessary, it also deploys the head protection curtains in the event of a detected rollover.
An occupant classification system (OCS) is also a standard safety feature. OCS automatically turns the front passenger's front air bag on or off based on the weight category determined by weight sensor readings from the front passenger seat.
Both the models come with a universal LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system in the second row and two rear head restraints.
